The south of Rodrigues consists of the regions of Port Sud-East and Rivière Cocos. These are some of the most popular touristic areas on the island. From the region of Port Sud-Est and its villages of Montagne Malgache, Mourouk, Pompee, and Port Sud-Est Village, there are a number of adventure and water sport activities available. Wind and Kite surfing are especially popular in Marouk, as well as diving and snorkelling to glimpse the amazing coral reefs and tropical fish.

Sail boat trips are recommended from Port Sud-Est to explore the inlets in the lagoon. Ziplining in Montagne Malgache is not to be missed for the breath-taking views across the valleys and lagoons. For a taste of authentic island life visit some of the villages of Rivière Cocos like Anse Baleine, Anse Raffin, Citron Donis, Eau Vannée, and Riviere Cocos Village.

Port Sud-Est

Port Sud-Est in the south of the island is an ideal spot from which to hop on a sail boat and explore the inlets in the southern lagoon. Experienced skippers will share their in depth knowledge and provide a fun and secure outing. Other attractions in the area include Club Osmosis and the Nest Kitesurfing club.

Montagne Malgache

Montagne Malgache which faces the south coast affords breath-taking views all the way to the lagoon for those hiking in the area. Those with an adventurous spirit can try ziplining, provided by Tyrodrig. The zip line adventure carries you across three lush green valleys, over 400 metres, at a height of over 100 metres. The zip lines are suspended above a nature reserve and are set-up with a respect for the environment and the landscape. The views over the forest and lagoon are not to be missed. The bed and breakfast, La Belle Paysanne is one of the accommodation options available in the area.

Mourouk

Marouk in the south of Rodrigues is one of the best places on the island for adventure sports. The trade winds and immense lagoon offer ideal conditions for glide sports like wind and kite surfing, with the most adventurous able to surf the reef waves. Marouk Cove has also gained international recognition with the Rodrigues Kite Surfing Festival held in June every year. Glide sports fans regularly travel here from all over the world to enjoy the favourable conditions. The Marouk Ebony Hotel’s glide sports centre offer equipment rental and proficiency courses.

The Marouk Ebony hotel also hosts the Bouba Diving Centre which offers a range of diving activities for beginners and experienced divers. The Marouk Marine Park offers divers the opportunity to discover the spectacular coral reef system that is teeming with marine life such as Rays, Jackfish, Turtles and Reef Sharks among many others. Snorkelling is also a popular activity in the Marouk Marine Park, for the chance to glimpse Clown Fish, Parrot Fish, Trumpet Fish and more. Other attractions in Marouk Cove include the Regattas. The regattas continue the traditions of the Rodriguans, whose elders still recall certain epic boat races of a bygone era. These days there are still wooden but also fibreglass pirogues with colourful sails that are cheered on by hundreds of enthusiastic spectators from the shore.
