Welcome to our site
The central region of Rodrigues consists of Lataniers-Mont Lubin, Mangues-Quatre Vents and Petit Gabriel.
Despite the low elevation of the country as a whole, the central region of Rodrigues is fairly mountainous
with many popular mountain hiking trails. The highest peak of Rodrigues is Mont Limon, in Lataniers. Other
notable villages in the Lataniers-Mont Lubin region include Citronelle, Grande Montagne, Mont Lubin, Orange,
Palissade Ternel, Sygangue and Vangar.
Grande Montagne is particularly important as it has been declared a nature reserve and a number of plants and
birds can be found here. Near Palissade Ternel is Mont Bois Noir that is home to the botanical gardens Jardin
des Cinq Sens, which is a must visit for nature lovers. Accommodation options in the area include Les Filaos
guest house in Grande Montagne and Le Tropical bed and breakfast in Mont Bois Noir. The region of Petit
Gabriel is home to the village of Saint Gabriel which attracts visitors for the impressive St Gabriel Church.
Hundreds of locals flock here every Sunday, forming one of the largest congregations of the Port Louis
diocese.
Port Sud-Est in the south of the island is an ideal spot from which to hop on a sail boat and explore the inlets in the southern lagoon. Experienced skippers will share their in depth knowledge and provide a fun and secure outing. Other attractions in the area include Club Osmosis and the Nest Kitesurfing club.
Mont Bois Noir, near Palissade Ternel in the centre of the island is known for the Jardin des Cinq Sens, (Garden of Five Senses) the first botanical gardens of Rodrigues offering enchanting and verdant scenery. Visitors can immerse themselves in the fauna and flora of the island including endemic plants unique to Rodrigues, and fruit trees as well as aromatic medicinal plants and flowers. Hour long guided commentated tours are available which are educational and interactive.
Saint Gabriel in the centre of the island is home to the surprisingly grand St Gabriel Church. The church was constructed between 1936 and 1939, built by local volunteers who gruellingly heaved stone, sand and coral from all corners of the island. The church hosts one of the largest congregations in the Port Louis diocese with hundreds of Rodriguans gathering here every Sunday.
Grande Montagne is in the centre of the island and has been declared nature reserve to preserve one of the last remaining forests on Rodrigues. The Mauritian Wildlife Foundation (MWF) has supervised the planting of over 150,000 native plant species, and the restoration of this ecosystem that has ensured the survival of the Rodrigues fody and the Rodrigues warbler bird species. There are many hiking trails that pass through the forest and although they are not particularly well marked, it is difficult to get too lost. Be sure to pick up a field guide to help with bird and plant identification.
